How to change the default word template when you are creating a new Microsoft Word document

Please follow the below steps to change the template for default word document which gets opened when you create a new word document:

  1. Open Microsoft Word
  2. On the File tab, click Open
  3. Go to the file path of C:\Users\user-name(your login name in your desktop / laptop computer)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
  4. Open the Normal template file (File name - Normal.dotm)
  5. Make changes in this Normal template file that you want as default setting for new word documents – such as fonts, margins, spacing, and other settings. You can use the same commands and features that you use to change a document — but remember that any changes that you make to Normal.dotm will be applied to documents that you create in the future.
  6. When you have finished, click the File tab, and then click Save and exit/close.
  7. All future new word documents will have the default settings saved by you.
